Standards Music - Beginning Band, Year 1

What students should know and be able to do

  1. The student acquires the knowledge and skills necessary to create, to perform and to respond effectively to the arts.


    To meet this standard, the student will

    1. understand and apply arts concepts and vocabulary to communicate ideas
      • read and notate whole, half, dotted half, quarter, dotted quarter, and eighth notes and rests in 2/4, 3/4 and 4/4
      • sight read simple melodies in the clef of chosen instrument
      • identify and define standard notation symbols for pitch, rhythm, dynamics, tempo, articulation, and expression
    2. organize arts elements into artistic compositions
    3. use standard notation to record one's own musical ideas and the musical ideas of others
    4. use and develop arts skills and techniques to solve problems and express ideas
      • develop criteria for evaluating the quality and effectiveness of music performances, and compositions, and apply the criteria in personal listening and performing
      • evaluate the quality and effectiveness of one's own and others' performances, compositions, arrangements, and improvisations by applying specific criteria appropriate for the style of the music, and offer constructive suggestions for improvement
    5. use skills of craftsmanship to produce quality work
      • perform on one instrument accurately and independently, alone and in small and large ensembles, with good posture, good playing position, and good breath (or stick) control
      • perform with expression and technical accuracy on at least one wind or percussion instrument, a repertoire of instrumental literature with a level of difficulty of 1, on a scale of 1 to 6
    6. create, present, and evaluate artworks using visual arts, music, drama, and dance
      • perform independent instrumental parts while other students play contrasting parts
      • perform in groups, blending instrumental timbres, matching dynamic levels, and responding to the cues of the conductor
  2. The student applies the creative process with arts knowledge and skills to reason and solve problems.

  3. To meet this standard, the student will:

    1. use the senses to gather and process information
      • listen to him or herself and adjust playing to match that of rest of group
      • read musical notation markings in music and respond appropriately on instrument
    2. generate and analyze solutions to problems using creativity and imagination
      • help others through suggestions and class discussion to solve musical impasses
      • collaborate and form ideas together as a group to help create the final product for a performance
    3. use arts criteria to consider the effectiveness of personal work and that of others
      • describe specific music events in a given aural example, using appropriate terminology
  4. The student uses at least one of the art forms (visual arts, music, drama, and/or dance) to communicate ideas and feelings


    To meet this standard, the student will:

    1. use image, sound, action, and movement through the arts to express individual ideas for a specific purpose
      • play a chosen instrument in a manner that lends to the style of music being played
    2. reflect and respond critically to the use of the arts in all forms of communication
      • identify various uses of music in daily experiences and describe characteristics that make certain music suitable for each use
    3. use combinations of art forms to communicate in multi-media formats
      • use computers, synthesizers, sound systems, audio-visual aids and equipment and other forms of technology to enhance musical productions and presentations
  5. The student understands how the arts connect to other subject areas, life, and work.


    To meet this standard, the student will:

    1. use arts skills and knowledge in other subject areas
      • describe ways in which the principles and subject matter of other disciplines taught in school are interrelated with those of music
      • have the opportunity to research and use music of different cultures/time periods to relate to what is being taught in core classes
    2. apply ideas and skills developed in the arts to daily life
      • set practice goals and track personal practice on a chart
      • organize music folder
    3. demonstrate an ability to use artistic knowledge in personal and community decision making
      • participate in planning concerts and be aware of the decision-making processes that go along with that task
    4. recognize the influence of the arts in shaping and reflecting cultures and history
      • understand the place art takes in history, consider how a work of art grew out of its time and place
      • describe distinguishing characteristics of representative music genres and styles from a variety of cultures
      • compare in several cultures of the world, the function that music serves, the roles of musicians, and the conditions under which music is typically performed
    5. incorporate arts knowledge and skills into the workplace
      • be exposed to different careers in music
