Standards Music - Choir

What students should know and be able to do

1. The student acquires the knowledge and skills necessary to create, to perform and to respond effectively to the arts.

To meet this standard, the student will:

A. understand and apply arts concepts and vocabulary to communicate ideas

• read and notate whole, half, quarter, eighth, and sixteenth notes and rests in 2/4, 3/4, and 4/4, 6/8, and 3/8, and alla breve meter signatures
• sight read simple melodies in the clef of chosen instrument
• identify and define standard notation symbols for pitch, rhythm, dynamics, tempo, articulation, and expression

B. organize arts elements into artistic compositions

• use standard notation to write one’s own musical ideas and the musical ideas of others
• arrange simple pieces for voice with simple piano or guitar accompaniment

C. use and develop arts skills and techniques to solve problems and express ideas

• develop criteria for evaluating the quality and effectiveness of music performances, and compositions, and apply the criteria in personal listening and performing
• evaluate the quality and effectiveness of one’s own and others’ performances, compositions, arrangements, and improvisations by applying specific criteria appropriate for the style of the music, and offer constructive suggestions for improvement

D. use skills of craftsmanship to produce quality work

• sing independently, on pitch and in rhythm with appropriate timbre, diction, posture, and maintain a steady tempo
• sing from memory a varied repertoire of songs representing genres and styles from diverse cultures
• sing expressively with appropriate dynamics, phrasing and interpretation
• echo simple melodies either played on piano, or sung by instructor

E. create, present, and evaluate artworks using visual arts, music, drama, and dance

• sing independent parts while other students sing contrasting parts
• perform in groups, blending vocal timbres, matching dynamic levels, and responding to the cues of the conductor
• perform music with expression appropriate for the work being performed

2. The student applies the creative process with arts knowledge and skills to reason and solve problems.

To meet this standard, the student will:

A. use the senses to gather and process information

• listen to him or herself and adjust singing to match that of rest of group
• read musical notation markings in music and respond appropriately with voice

B. generate and analyze solutions to problems using creativity and imagination

• help others through suggestions and class discussion to solve musical impasses
• collaborate and form ideas together as a group to help create the final product for a performance

C. use arts criteria to consider the effectiveness of personal work and that of others

• describe specific music events in a given aural example, using appropriate terminology
• identify simple music forms in repertoire (ABA, Rondo, etc.)

3. The student uses at least one of the art forms (visual arts, music, drama, and/or dance) to communicate ideas and feelings.

To meet this standard, the student will:

A. use image, sound, action, and movement through the arts to express individual ideas for a specific purpose

• have opportunity to create/compose and perform music for specific events

B. reflect and respond critically to the use of the arts in all forms of communication

• identify various uses of music in daily experiences and describe characteristics that make certain music suitable for each use

C. use combinations of art forms to communicate in multi-media formats

• combine choral instrumental and string performance music with multi-media instruments

4. The student understands how the arts connect to other subject areas, life, and work.

To meet this standard, the student will:

A. use arts skills and knowledge in other subject areas

• describe ways in which the principles and subject matter of other disciplines taught in school are interrelated with those of music
• have the opportunity to research and use music of different cultures/time periods to relate the what is being taught in core classes

B. apply ideas and skills developed in the arts to daily life

• set practice goals and track personal practice on a chart
• organize music folder
• compare two or more arts and how the characteristic of each art (sound in music, visual stimuli in visual arts, movement in dance, and human interrelationship in theater) can be used to transform similar events, scenes, emotions, or ideas into works of art

C. demonstrate an ability to use artistic knowledge in personal and community decision making

• have the opportunity to be a part of committees and to lead said committees that make decisions for the whole choir
• participate in planning concerts and all the decision-making processes that go along with that task

D. recognize the influence of the arts in shaping and reflecting cultures and history

• identify by genre or style, aural examples of music from various historical periods and cultures
• describe distinguishing characteristics of representative music genres and styles from a variety of cultures
• compare in several cultures of the world, the function that music serves, the roles of musicians, and the conditions under which music is typically performed
• classify by genre and style (and if applicable, by historical period, composer, and title) a varied body of exemplary musical works

E. incorporate arts knowledge and skills into the workplace

• be exposed to different careers in music
