Standards Music

What students should know and be able to do

1. The student acquires the knowledge and skills necessary to create, to perform and to respond effectively to the arts.

To meet this standard, the student will:

A. understand and apply arts concepts and vocabulary to communicate ideas

demonstrate ability to maintain a steady beat by walking, clapping, moving, and creating a steady beat on a drum, in a familiar song or word pattern

demonstrate the ability to respond in various ways to notated or spoken rhythmic patterns

B. organize arts elements into artistic compositions

demonstrate ability to clap/perform simple notated rhythms (devised or standard notation) using __ and __ in a four-beat pattern (i.e. __ __ __ __)

demonstrate understanding of note value "ta" __ (quarter note) and "ti-ti" ____ (eighth notes)

accurately clap/perform simple notated rhythms (devised or standard notation) __ and ____, in a four-beat pattern

C. use and develop arts skills and techniques to solve problems and express ideas

develop awareness of melodic line by using simple melodies to illustrate the concepts of high/low pitches, ascending/descending melodic lines and repeated tones

demonstrate ability to discern between high and low pitches by vocal mimic and body movement

perform a melodic piece by following musical notation for high, low and melody on Orff instruments or keyboard instruments or other melodic instruments

D. use skills of craftsmanship to produce quality work

recognize and perform the diatonic scale, (Do, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, La, Ti, Do) through voice, instrument and body movement

demonstrate scale with Curwin/Kodaly hand signs

identify Sol, Mi, La patterns and association with children's songs

identify repeated tones within a melody

E. create, present, and evaluate artworks using visual arts, music, drama, and dance

compose and perform songs on Orff instruments, rhythm instruments, tape recordings, concerts, assemblies, and creative dramatics

listen to, watch, and critique their performances

2. The student applies the creative process with arts knowledge and skills to reason and solve problems.

To meet this standard, the student will:

A. use the senses to gather and process information

identify repeated tones within a sung melody by using body movements and/or singing

identify repeated tones by looking at a piece written in standard notation

become aware of the musical alphabet, note names A-G

state the note names of the musical alphabet, (i.e. A, B, C, D, E, F, G) with accuracy

B. generate and analyze solutions to problems using creativity and imagination

develop awareness and know "AB" form in music

recognize verse, chorus, verse in songs

demonstrate ability to perform AB form of music by reading devised notation (melodic or rhythmic)

experience repeated AB form (verse, chorus, verse, chorus) in body percussion, Orff instruments, rhythm instruments, and voice

C. use arts criteria to consider the effectiveness of personal work and that of others

demonstrate ability to evaluate individual, small group and full class performances by listening, watching and sharing appropriate musical evaluation

3. The student uses at least one of the art forms (visual arts, music, drama, and/or dance) to communicate ideas and feelings.

To meet this standard, the student will:

A. use image, sound, action, and movement through the arts to express individual ideas for a specific purpose

create, perform, and critique individual, small group and large group experiences in dance, creative dramatics, conducting, composing, playing melodic or rhythm instruments

B. reflect and respond critically to the use of the arts in all forms of communication

perform through reading or memory

perform simple round/circle dances with small/large group

perform partner songs and simple rounds/canons

perform using a variety of media and self

C. use combinations of art forms to communicate in multi-media formats

use rounds/canons, ostinato, and bourdoon to create "effect" in music

accompany poem, solos, ensembles, and group with rhythm or melodic instruments

4. The student understands how the arts connect to other subject areas, life, and work.

To meet this standard, the student will:

A. use arts skills and knowledge in other subject areas

listen for music connections to their lives; radio, RV, commercials, posters, stationery, instruments, concerts, festivals, customs, traditions

be aware that music is everywhere

B. apply ideas and skills developed in the arts to daily life

be aware that music is everywhere - concept

become aware of expression in music through experiencing dynamics, tempo, timbre, glissando, tremolo, and creative dramatics to life

correctly respond to above terms through creative dramatics, Kodaly, Orff instruments, rhythm instruments and dance, and keyboard instruments

C. demonstrate an ability to use artistic knowledge in personal and community decision making

be aware that music is universal language - concept

experience music in concerts, symphonies, dance and listening activities

perform skills for an audience, i.e. class, grade level, assemblies, concerts

D. recognize the influence of the arts in shaping and reflecting cultures and history

be aware that music is universal language - concept

experience culture through listening, playing, singing, dancing, to music or varied cultures

determine instrument origination through sound, listening, and personal experience

E. incorporate arts knowledge and skills into the workplace

understand and demonstrate how music does/can enhance daily life (i.e. radio, TV, stereos, sound systems, concerts, etc.)
