Standards Music

What students should know and be able to do

1. The student acquires the knowledge and skills necessary to create, to perform and to respond effectively to the arts.

To meet this standard, the student will:

A. understand and apply arts concepts and vocabulary to communicate ideas

show ability to respond to notated or spoken patterns by clapping/performing using specified time values - rhythm

identify note and time value using 4/4 meter

demonstrate ability to clap or play a four beat rhythmic pattern in 4/4 time using __, __, __ (quarter note, eighth note, quarter rest) - beat

demonstrate ability to perform ___, ___, __ (eighth note and quarter note) patterns by clapping/performing accurately from simple notated patterns

B. organize arts elements into artistic compositions

experience 8 beat rhythmic patterns incorporating use of barline

echo an 8 beat rhythmic pattern in 4/4 time (i.e. ________ / ________)

experience notes and value of __, __, __, __, _____, ______, in ta, ti, etc. and actual note names

recognize and identify common musical symbols

C. use and develop arts skills and techniques to solve problems and express ideas

display increased ability to identify/sing/perform various elements of melodic line

display increasing ability to use solfège and Curwin hand signals for intervals and pitches of the diatonic scale

display ability to use solfège and Curwen hand signals for the following syllables Sol-Mi, Sol-Mi-La, and Do, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, La, Ti, Do (the diatonic scale)

D. use skills of craftsmanship to produce quality work

display ability to identify the home tone syllable "Do" of a song

sing home tone (Do) when hearing a song (vocal or instrumental)

display ability to read a notated melodic line

show ability to hear/see repeated tones in melodic line

upon hearing a melody, respond verbally or with body movement when repeated tones are heard

upon looking at a score (devised or standard) identify repeated tones

perform a melodic composition using devised or standard notation to show understanding of melodic line and repeated tones

display increased ability to sing a simple melodic line

E. create, present, and evaluate artworks using visual arts, music, drama, and dance

display ability to sing (with others or solo) a single line melody with an acceptable degree of accuracy

develop awareness of various techniques used to create musical form through performance, drama, dance

create harmony/texture by using: "ABA" form, 8 beat phrases, additive and rounds, (group processes)

2. The student applies the creative process with arts knowledge and skills to reason and solve problems.

To meet this standard, the student will:

A. use the senses to gather and process information

experience texture/harmony in music by performing pitched and non-pitched accompaniments

demonstrate increased ability to perform a harmonic accompaniment against a familiar song/poem

show ability to play pitched (Orff and keyboards) and non-pitched, rhythm instruments

play a bourdoon and ostinato on Orff instruments

B. generate and analyze solutions to problems using creativity and imagination

show awareness of expression in music by identification and demonstration of various dynamic and expressive techniques

identify timbre

identify tremolo and glissando

use skill and techniques and knowledge to create, compose, and enjoy music

C. use arts criteria to consider the effectiveness of personal work and that of others

demonstrate ability to create, identify and critique musical form, styles and terms

3. The student uses at least one of the art forms (visual arts, music, drama, and/or dance) to communicate ideas and feelings.

To meet this standard, the student will:

A. use image, sound, action, and movement through the arts to express individual ideas for a specific purpose

demonstrate through music, dance, drama and instrumentation, in a performance setting

B. reflect and respond critically to the use of the arts in all forms of communication

use music to create and learn across all subject areas

C. use combinations of art forms to communicate in multi-media formats

use drama, dance, art, music, instruments, as content to video tape, tape record, view critique and perform

4. The student understands how the arts connect to other subject areas, life, and work.

To meet this standard, the student will:

A. use arts skills and knowledge in other subject areas

demonstrate a connection of the arts to real life personal experiences through performance, writing, art and other media

B. apply ideas and skills developed in the arts to daily life

recognize music form, recordings, concerts, culture, and instruments to life experiences

C. demonstrate an ability to use artistic knowledge in personal and community decision making

choose areas of music and performance for presentations at school, home, community, etc.

D. recognize the influence of the arts in shaping and reflecting cultures and history

create and compose and accompany musical pieces that reflect culture and history, through listening and sound

E. incorporate arts knowledge and skills into the workplace

share, brainstorm and create music to enhance their personal dreams

identify how they "think music" and the arts enhance the workplace
