Standards Music

What students should know and be able to do

1. The student acquires the knowledge and skills necessary to create, to perform and to respond effectively to the arts.

To meet this standard, the student will:

A. understand and apply arts concepts and vocabulary to communicate ideas

use musical rhythm, melody, harmony, tone color/timbre, and form for musical expression of ideas

review and study the instruments of the orchestra, instrument families, and instruments of culture

B. organize arts elements into artistic compositions

arrange the musical elements of rhythm, melody, harmony, tone color/timbre, and form to create a composition

C. use and develop arts skills and techniques to solve problems and express ideas

use Orff and rhythm instruments to practice techniques specific to musical form

use the combined philosophies of Orff, Kodaly (solfège), Delcroze, and others to practice techniques specific to musical form

use keyboard labs, recorders, and other cultural instruments, with dance, drama, and narrative, to practice techniques specific to musical form

incorporate band and choir opportunities into the general music classroom

D. use skills of craftsmanship to produce quality work

recognize and identify quality musical work through:

music history

study of composers

listening

composition

performance

critique

E. create, present, and evaluate artworks using visual arts, music, drama, and dance

present/perform music for others in:

class

concerts

meetings

create music in all art forms using the process of:

perceiving

2. The student applies the creative process with arts knowledge and skills to reason and solve problems.

To meet this standard, the student will:

A. use the senses to gather and process information

use all senses to recognize sound, image, action, and movement in the environment

B. generate and analyze solutions to problems using creativity and imagination

explore and study the musical works of others for ideas

C. use arts criteria to consider the effectiveness of personal work and that of others

use musical criteria to describe a musical work by:

use of musical concepts and vocabulary

use of musical composition

use of musical craftsmanship

3. The student uses at least one of the art forms (visual arts, music, drama, and/or dance) to communicate ideas and feelings.

To meet this standard, the student will:

A. use image, sound, action, and movement through the arts to express individual ideas for a specific purpose

use image, sound, action and movement in class, grade level and all school presentations and performances

use image, sound, action and movement in band, choir, and/or other, i.e. orchestra, MIE, Delcroze, Kodaly, Orff musical media

B. reflect and respond critically to the use of the arts in all forms of communication

react to ideas, feelings, and meanings found in musical sounds, images, actions and dance/movement, for example, react as an audience would to a musical, concert, performance, etc.

be introduced to musical historical periods and composers and their works

C. use combinations of art forms to communicate in multi-media formats

combine all art forms using imagination and creativity to express ideas or understanding of music

4. The student understands how the arts connect to other subject areas, life, and work.

To meet this standard, the student will:

A. use arts skills and knowledge in other subject areas

use music and art forms to reflect concepts learned in other subjects

B. apply ideas and skills developed in the arts to daily life

use musical skills in play and school work to respond to and record their world

C. demonstrate an ability to use artistic knowledge in personal and community decision making

identify musical elements in the natural and designed world, (i.e. patterns, colors, sounds and movement)

D. recognize the influence of the arts in shaping and reflecting cultures and history

identify examples of music in a variety of contexts within a culture:

E. incorporate arts knowledge and skills into the workplace
