Standards Music

What students should know and be able to do

1. The student acquires the knowledge and skills necessary to create, to perform and to respond effectively to the arts.

To meet this standard, the student will:

A. understand and apply arts concepts and vocabulary to communicate ideas

demonstrate ability to maintain a steady beat by walking, clapping, or moving to the steady beat of a drum, familiar song or word pattern

demonstrate the concept of steady beat with body percussion and simple rhythm instruments

demonstrate ability to perform and play simple rhythm patterns of children’s songs and nursery rhymes

demonstrate ability to sing high and low pitches and patterns of sol, mi, la

sing songs and participate in group singing using seasonal, standard repertoire, patriotic and popular songs

B. organize arts elements into artistic compositions

demonstrate the ability to mimic the teacher and students in simple ta and ti patterns of rhythm

sing, clap and play simple rhythm patterns

recognize solfège and Curwen hand signs to compose with their body

demonstrates ability to discern between ascending and descending melodic lines by using appropriate high/low body or vocal responses

C. use and develop arts skills and techniques to solve problems and express ideas

demonstrate AB form in singing, clapping and body movement

sing and play simple rounds and canons in two-part harmony

demonstrate understanding of form and verse, chorus, verse through performing simple songs, i.e. "Old MacDonald"

D. use skills of craftsmanship to produce quality work

recognize and perform pentatonic scale - do, re, mi, fa, sol, and pattern songs of sol, mi, la...

rehearse and perform music for an audience, i.e. classroom, teacher, assembly, concert, open house

E. create, present, and evaluate artworks using visual arts, music, drama, and dance

experience different musical styles through listening, watching, playing, singing and pretending

recognize famous musical works by composers, through listening, and current "playtime" of those pieces, i.e. radio, commercials, symphony, concerts, etc.

2. The student applies the creative process with arts knowledge and skills to reason and solve problems.

To meet this standard, the student will:

A. use the senses to gather and process information

draw, act, conduct, accompany and move to various musical pieces

play and compose on Orff Bar instruments

know and perform the pentatonic 5 tone children’s songs

B. generate and analyze solutions to problems using creativity and imagination

demonstrate fast/slow; loud/soft; high/low; sounds through body percussion, voice exploration, rhythm instruments, and creative dramatics/musical games

C. use arts criteria to consider the effectiveness of personal work and that of others

listen to their voices, instruments

determine skill from watching their performance from a video representation

self evaluate through individual performance by listening, playing, clapping, etc.

3. The student uses at least one of the art forms (visual arts, music, drama, and/or dance) to communicate ideas and feelings.

To meet this standard, the student will:

A. use image, sound, action, and movement through the arts to express individual ideas for a specific purpose

create, improvise and perform in:

a. dance
b. creative dramatics
c. conducting
d. composing
e. playing melodic rhythm, Orff instruments

B. reflect and respond critically to the use of the arts in all forms of communication

perform from watching, listening and/or memory: simple songs, rhythm, rhythm patterns; body percussion

C. use combinations of art forms to communicate in multi-media formats

use creative dramatics, art/drawing, video, cassette, computer, melodics or rhythmic instruments, puppets to communicate music

4. The student understands how the arts connect to other subject areas, life, and work.

To meet this standard, the student will:

A. use arts skills and knowledge in other subject areas

listen for music in his/her world, i.e. TV, radio, CD, stereo, tape recorder, newspaper, magazines, concerts, stores, traditions, and seasons

B. apply ideas and skills developed in the arts to daily life

recognize and share how music is everywhere

recognize and demonstrate how they are music

C. demonstrate an ability to use artistic knowledge in personal and community decision making

discuss and introduce where music happens in personal lives and communities

D. recognize the influence of the arts in shaping and reflecting cultures and history

discuss and sample different styles of music, i.e. Latin American, Asian, American Indian, European, American, through songs, tapes, dance, instruments

E. incorporate arts knowledge and skills into the workplace

introduce and discuss how music is everywhere in our work choices
