Standards Visual Arts

What students should know and be able to do

1. The student acquires the knowledge and skills necessary to create, to perform and to respond effectively to the arts.

To meet this standard, the student will:

A. understand and apply arts concepts and vocabulary to communicate ideas

create artwork using knowledge of the elements and principles of design and skill in a variety of techniques of media

communicate ideas visually and be able to classify work according to medium, style and theme

B. organize arts elements into artistic compositions

create artworks which integrate and display knowledge gained in perception and sensitivity , principles and elements of design

recognize that principles and elements of design are the structural components and guidelines of composition

C. use and develop arts skills and techniques to solve problems and express ideas

develop an idea into a complete and logical finished product

create works of visual art that demonstrate choices of media and materials which effectively express ideas

create artworks that demonstrate ability to use a variety of techniques to solve artistic problems

D. use skills of craftsmanship to produce quality work

use art materials and tools in a safe and responsible manner

create works of art which demonstrate craftsmanship

create works of art which demonstrate high quality including neatness and strong technical skills

E. create, present, and evaluate artworks using visual arts, music, drama, and dance

create artwork using a variety of media, tools and techniques

use art skills to produce artwork

display artwork in a variety of ways and settings around school

evaluate own work applying art criticism skills and knowledge of art concepts and principles, to compare with other works

evaluate and compare artworks applying concepts and principles knowledge

2. The student applies the creative process with arts knowledge and skills to reason and solve problems.

To meet this standard, the student will:

A. use the senses to gather and process information

create projects by exploring different possibilities in terms of media choices

research ideas from various sources

B. generate and analyze solutions to problems using creativity and imagination

create artwork in an expressive and imaginative way

analyze a variety of two and three dimensional references to support their creative choices

C. use arts criteria to consider the effectiveness of personal work and that of others

effectively critique visual products

evaluate the effectiveness of artwork in terms of organization, structures and function

use established criteria to effectively evaluate strengths and weaknesses of artwork

3. The student uses at least one of the art forms (visual arts, music, drama, and/or dance) to communicate ideas and feelings.

To meet this standard, the student will:

A. use image, sound, action, and movement through the arts to express individual ideas for a specific purpose

use visual art through organizational elements, principles and functions of design to express a specific idea

reflect on how artwork differs visually, spatially, and functionally and can be created for specific purposes

B. reflect and respond critically to the use of the arts in all forms of communication

evaluate the effectiveness in terms of organizational structures and function (Is the statement or goal of the piece of work clear?) and respond to this

C. use combinations of art forms to communicate in multi-media formats

communicate in a variety of media within one project combining other art disciplines to make a statement using video, text, visual art, and sound (as in Senior Project)

4. The student understands how the arts connect to other subject areas, life, and work.

To meet this standard, the student will:

A. use arts skills and knowledge in other subject areas

connect art with all other subject areas

create projects for math, science, history, English and foreign language that use art skills learned

apply artistic processes to both enhance and demonstrate learning in all subjects

B. apply ideas and skills developed in the arts to daily life

use art skills to analyze and react to his or her world

use art skills and vocabulary to make decisions and make changes in daily activities and events

C. demonstrate an ability to use artistic knowledge in personal and community decision making

identify the influence and effect that visual arts and community have on each other

use sensory information and aesthetic understanding to examine the natural and designed world

D. recognize the influence of the arts in shaping and reflecting cultures and history

differentiate among a variety of historical and cultural contexts in terms of characteristics and purposes of works of art

understand how technological advances change the way cultures express and interpret meaning

E. incorporate arts knowledge and skills into the workplace

recognize that perception continuously changes

recognize that visual images evoke emotional reaction

use art skills and knowledge to present ideas, inform, persuade or design products
