Standards Visual Arts

What students should know and be able to do

1. The student acquires the knowledge and skills necessary to create, to perform and to respond effectively to the arts.

To meet this standard, the student will:

A. understand and apply arts concepts and vocabulary to communicate ideas

demonstrate knowledge of the importance of line, shape/form, texture, color, and space through a variety of media (pencil, tempera, clay etc.)

demonstrate an understanding of basic arts concepts and vocabulary through classroom discussion and project composition

understand and apply common concepts in the arts elements, techniques and media

B. organize arts elements into artistic compositions

arrange arts elements to create a composition

explain one element in their composition

C. use and develop arts skills and techniques to solve problems and express ideas

practice techniques specific to each art medium

practice correct use of art tools

D. use skills of craftsmanship to produce quality work

rework and improve idea from sketch to final product

improve technical skills through practice

E. create, present, and evaluate artworks using visual arts, music, drama, and dance

create, present, talk about and answer questions regarding artworks (show and tell)

use art vocabulary to describe and analyze artworks

2. The student applies the creative process with arts knowledge and skills to reason and solve problems.

To meet this standard, the student will:

A. use the senses to gather and process information

use all the senses to recognize sound, image, action, and movement in the environment

illustrate stories or songs, create symbols to communicate ideas to the class

B. generate and analyze solutions to problems using creativity and imagination

utilize professional artworks for ideas

use creativity to develop solution to a problem

C. use arts criteria to consider the effectiveness of personal work and that of others

use art vocabulary to describe a work of art

3. The student uses at least one of the art forms (visual arts, music, drama, and/or dance) to communicate ideas and feelings.

To meet this standard, the student will:

A. use image, sound, action, and movement through the arts to express individual ideas for a specific purpose

understand that art is used for a variety of functions

B. reflect and respond critically to the use of the arts in all forms of communication

develop an understanding of how use of the arts elements affect emotion

C. use combinations of art forms to communicate in multi-media formats

combine art forms using imagination and creativity to express ideas or understanding, for example: plays, science fair projects, etc.

4. The student understands how the arts connect to other subject areas, life, and work.

To meet this standard, the student will:

A. use arts skills and knowledge in other subject areas

use art forms to reflect concepts learned in other subjects

B. apply ideas and skills developed in the arts to daily life

use art skills and vocabulary to respond to and record his/her world

C. demonstrate an ability to use artistic knowledge in personal and community decision making

identify arts elements in the natural and designed world (patterns, colors, sounds and movement)

D. recognize the influence of the arts in shaping and reflecting cultures and history

consider how a work of art grew out of its time and place

compare and contrast two cultures through their artworks

E. incorporate arts knowledge and skills into the workplace

plan and create a project spotlighting originality and individual abilities
