Standards Visual Arts

What students should know and be able to do

1. The student acquires the knowledge and skills necessary to create, to perform and to respond effectively to the arts.

To meet this standard, the student will:

A. understand and apply arts concepts and vocabulary to communicate ideas

demonstrate an understanding of basic art concepts and vocabulary through classroom discussion critiques and project composition

demonstrate knowledge of the importance of line, shape/form, texture, color, space through projects in drawing, painting, printing and ceramic sculpture

B. organize arts elements into artistic compositions

create a composition - critique and then recreate changing the impact of their work

C. use and develop arts skills and techniques to solve problems and express ideas

explore and utilize art materials to problem solve

create compositions showing understanding of basic art techniques

show imagination and creativity through use of art skills and techniques

D. use skills of craftsmanship to produce quality work

create compositions with a focus on improving craftsmanship (technical skills and use of materials)

explore and improve attention to detail in every composition

E. create, present, and evaluate artworks using visual arts, music, drama, and dance

present and critique artwork of self and classmates using art vocabulary

utilize knowledge of basic art concepts in classroom discussion and critiques

review and revise work through preliminary sketches and then class critique of finished project

2. The student applies the creative process with arts knowledge and skills to reason and solve problems.

To meet this standard, the student will:

A. use the senses to gather and process information

illustrate stories or songs, creating symbols for messages the classroom should understand

B. generate and analyze solutions to problems using creativity and imagination

utilize professional artworks for ideas

use creativity to develop solutions to a problem

C. use arts criteria to consider the effectiveness of personal work and that of others

examine and critique various forms of artwork (professional and student work)

analyze the effectiveness of various forms of artwork (professional and student work)

utilize knowledge of art elements in classroom critiques

3. The student uses at least one of the art forms (visual arts, music, drama, and/or dance) to communicate ideas and feelings.

To meet this standard, the student will:

A. use image, sound, action, and movement through the arts to express individual ideas for a specific purpose

understand that art is used for a variety of functions - inform, express, show culture, persuade

B. reflect and respond critically to the use of the arts in all forms of communication

analyze the purpose and meaning of advertising

understand meaning and personal relevance of commercial art - Pop Art

demonstrate understanding of artistic communication through a persuasive composition

C. use combinations of art forms to communicate in multi-media formats

communicate through organization and synthesis of a variety of art information (collage, report)

4. The student understands how the arts connect to other subject areas, life, and work.

To meet this standard, the student will:

A. use arts skills and knowledge in other subject areas

demonstrate the ability to connect the arts and other subjects through illustrations or reports

B. apply ideas and skills developed in the arts to daily life

utilize art skills and vocabulary to protect themselves against the persuasions of commercial and media art

C. demonstrate an ability to use artistic knowledge in personal and community decision making

examine the natural and designed world in terms of elements and aesthetics

D. recognize the influence of the arts in shaping and reflecting cultures and history

understand the place art takes in history. Consider how a work of art grew out of its time and place

compare and contrast a variety of cultures through their artworks

E. incorporate arts knowledge and skills into the workplace

plan and create a project spotlighting individual abilities
