Integrating the Arts: Success in Every Classroom with Enthusiasm and Unraveling the Mysteries of the CBPAs

Experience the importance and value of integrating art across the curriculum along with unlocking the mysteries of the CBPA. Learn that art is a natural connection to all curricular areas. You will be involved in learning about various art projects and leave this class with a packet of ideas that can be easily integrated into your curriculum.

 

Words Their Way Phonics

Instructor: Wendy Ward

"Words Their Way" is an excellent resource to use for assessment of student spelling skills. After placing students in appropriate skill levels, teachers can provide differentiated instruction based on the needs of the students. Excellent tool to identify and remediate struggling spellers. RSD participants will receive the $40.00 book and CD of resources.

 

ELL: Teaching Content to Secondary English Language Learners (Grades 6-12) Note: This class has been cancelled.

In this session we will work together to examine the developmental process of English language acquisition.  We'll also focus on how secondary content area teachers can maximize learning for ELL students while students are acquiring English.  This fun and interactive session will explore ideas for cooperative group work, lesson presentations and class work/homework accommodation in order to maintain complex cognitive demand and provide support for second language learners.

The SIOP Model is currently used in most of the 50 states and in hundreds of schools across the U.S. as well as in several other countries. The intent of the model is to facilitate high quality instruction for ELLs in content area teaching. She'll talk about sheltered instruction and tips for instruction in content areas.

Mentoring Matters - Day 1

Audience: Grades K-12 Certificated Staff*       

Time: 8:00am-3:30pm (Lunch break included)

*Note: You must have at least two years teaching experience and complete this course to qualify as a mentor.

Mentoring Matters replaces Cognitive Coaching as our training model for mentors. The seminar moves mentors from simply handholding and advice dispensing to becoming skillful growth agents. Practical tools, specific templates, and technical tips will be shared. This seminar is also applicable for Specialists and Administrators as a way to support their colleagues' learning and to build capacity. Certificated staff completing this four-day course (August 21, August 22, October 23, and October 24) will qualify to become Professional Growth Mentors.

 

Issues of Abuse- Day 1

Instructor: Cathy Gangstad           

Location: Cedarcrest High School LRC

The impact of exposure to abuse and neglect has far-reaching cognitive implications for students, including stunted brain growth, diminished academic functioning, poor impulse control, difficulty focusing and paying attention, low self-esteem, anger bursts, and poor peer relationships and social skills. Educators are first responders to the consequences of abuse in the lives of students. During these interactive workshops, participants will explore the consequences that abuse and neglect have on the abilities and lives of students. Participants will acquire a working knowledge of the physical and behavioral indicators of abuse and neglect and a thorough understanding of Washington State law regarding mandated reporters; their responsibilities and their rights. They will also discover the ramifications of violent family dynamics that extend into the classroom influencing a student's ability to learn and to interact in socially appropriate ways.

 

New Teacher Induction

Note: This course is for new teachers (less than 90 consecutive days in a classroom) only.

Teacher Induction is a year-long course designed to support new educators. It consists of a fast-paced, energetic summer institute to get the year off to a great start, monthly meetings, and a collaborative network of support. The summer institute will provide:

•  The opportunity to meet other new educators.

•  Preparation for the first days of school through the development and refinement of procedures, expectations and routines.

•  A toolkit for effective classroom management and development of a positive learning climate.

•  An overview of Riverview School District 's Teacher Assistance Program (TAP) support for educators new to the profession.

•  Lunch is included!

 

 

Ten Minute Math Activities: Strengthen Skills and Building Speed

Instructor: Wendy Ward

Audience: Grades 2-5 All Staff        

Time: 8:30-11:30am

Make and take math session for teachers of grades 2-5.  We'll explore quick math activities that can be used during transitions or warm-ups outside of the scheduled math time.  Teachers will leave with a variety of ideas to weave graphing into their regular routine.  We'll also create math games that reinforce basic skills and strategy.  Kids love these fun, fast-paced activities.

This day is for teachers and specialists new to the district.  The agenda will cover district mission, vision, philosophy, goals, and provide a curriculum overview.  The presentation will include information about special programs.  A tour of the district will be included.  All participants will be paid for their time.

 

 

CBA Lab

This class will give you time to plan and work on your Social Studies CBA.  Bring ideas and your own materials to begin working on developing and/or planning for the CBAs.

 

Engaging Minds: Brain Compatible Strategies to Improve Student Achievement

To be successful, educators must understand how the brain learns and remembers. During this interactive workshop, explore brain-compatible strategies to improve student understanding and learning. Discover easy-to-implement brain-compatible instructional strategies to help students elaborate, rehearse, and consolidate information and skills. These best-practice strategies are appropriate pre-K through twelfth grade and are designed to help students find relevance and meaning in what they are learning.
