Volunteers Policy and Guidelines
How To Fulfill Your 60-Hour Commitment
If you want to find out more about volunteer opportunities there
are lots of ways to learn.
- Attend ERMA Volunteer Academy sessions
and ERMA Parent Teacher Association meetings.
- Read the ERMA Newsletter, check bulletin boards, and check
the ERMA web site.
- Check out the Volunteer Cart on site. It should have some information
about something you can do right away.
- Ask another parent volunteer what they do.
- Please avoid engaging teachers in conversation about volunteer
opportunities during school hours in order to allow them to be
with their classes.
Here are some suggestions for getting started in your ERMA Volunteering.
- Join a committee that suits your interests. There may be things
you can do for the Art committee, Library committee or other
committees that can be done at home or on-site.
- Check with the Head Parent for your
child's classroom for work that needs to be done or positions
that need to be filled.
- Check with the Head Parent for the other classrooms to see
if there is something you can do there. Sometimes school volunteers
have a better experience in a classroom without their child.
- Check with the Program Volunteer Coordinator about opportunities
that serve the whole program.
- Find something you are comfortable doing and do it often. Then
branch out and try something new.
Step Into Your Role
When you arrive at Eagle Rock to volunteer, please sign in and
put on your nametag/volunteer badge at the Volunteer Cart. If you
are already scheduled for volunteering, make sure you give yourself
enough time to check in and be ready to get started on time.
Documentation of Hours
- Keep a personal log of
your volunteer hours.
- Set a goal of having half your hours for the school year (30)
documented by January.
Attendance and Punctuality
Many people are counting on you, especially the students! Please
arrive at your designated place on time and ready to volunteer.
It is also important that you stay the entire duration of the task
you've committed to. If you must cancel, please call the office
as soon as possible to allow time to find a replacement.
Attire
Your appearance, dress, and grooming should be appropriate and
comfortable for any task that may be planned. The ERMA Dress Code applies to our parents and voluteers as well. Please dress accordingly.
Accepting Direction
Accept direction and supervision, recognizing that you are an
important helper. Remember, you do not take the place of a staff
member. Rather your role is to provide assistance and enrichment
with your personal skills and competence. Be consistent with the
school and teacher in observing rules for classroom behavior, schedule,
and atmosphere.
Expectations of Staff Regarding Volunteers
The staff expects the volunteer to
- Be patient, flexible, appreciative, respectful, and considerate.
- Clearly communicate their interests and expectations.
- Follow instructions.
- Recognize that the teacher is responsible for the classroom.
- Be professional at all times with language and actions.
- Be discreet and trustworthy with confidentiality issues regarding
staff and students.
Volunteer Rights
As a school volunteer, you have the right to
- Know as much about the school as possible.
- Be provided with the necessary training and supervision to
be successful in your activities.
- Be assigned worthwhile and challenging jobs.
- Have access to school policies and procedures.
- Be recognized for your valuable contributions to the educational
experience of our children.
