How to Learn a Word

Look at the word

  • Say the word the slow way to hear all the sounds. (Stretch it out.)
  • Find which letters go with these sounds.
  • Check for quiet (silent) letters. Circle them.
  • Say the word slowly while checking it from left to right with your eyes and/or finger.
  • Trace the letters from left to right.
  • Copy the letters from left to right.
  • Close your eyes and say the word slowly as you see the letters in your mind.
  • Write the word from memory.
  • Find it in many places to read.
  • Use it in your writing.
  • Link it with another word that’s like it. Which part is the same? Which part is different?
  • Mix up the letters and try to spell it correctly.
  • Notice the parts of longer words and learn each part.
  • Say the whole word each time you find it, make it, or use it.
