Homework Activity #22

Game of 10’s

Materials needed : Two decks of playing cards and a score sheet

Prep work : Remove all of the face cards from the decks of cards. You will use the cards numbered 2-10 and the aces. Aces equal the number one.

Get started : Four to six people can play this game. The winner is the player who gets 100 points first (You may set this score to any number you wish).

Step 1 Deal six cards to each player. The object of the game is to make as many 10’s as you can using the six cards. You may do this using addition or subtraction.

Example : If you have 10 6 3 1 5 4

You may make two 10’s using four cards or using three cards. One way you get 4 points, the other 3 points. They are:

10 6 3 1 OR 10 6 4

Step 2 Each card in your hand may be used only once in making a 10. After a player has played, they may draw more cards to fill the hand out to six (keep the cards already played in a pile on the table).

Scoring : For each card used in making a 10, a player gets one point. The most points a player can get in a given hand is 6.

Note : When first playing, young students enjoy getting a helping hand. You point out to them how to make a 10. Later, they want to play their own hands.
