October 10, 2007
Washington State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Terry Bergeson, presented the 2007 State Superintendent's Learning Improvement Award and the designation of "School of Distinction" to Cherry Valley Elementary School. The award was presented to Principal, Darcy Becker, and members of the Cherry Valley learning community including teachers, parents, a school board member, and district administration at a special ceremony at Mt. Ranier High School in Des Moines.
As State Superintendent Bergeson stated, "this award was created to honor and celebrate the amazing progress schools have made - and continue to make - in helping our students acquire the knowledge and skills that will serve them the rest of their lives."
The "Schools of Distinction" represent the top 5% of elementary, middle, and high schools whose students have shown outstanding growth in both reading and mathematics skills during a 6 year period. Cherry Valley was one of 86 schools out of nearly 2,500 schools state-wide to be chosen for this award.
