Riverview School District Celebrates Track and Field Improvements and Honors “Number 1 Fan”, Howard Miller

By: Leanne Christensen, RSD

Riverview District Administrators, Principals, School Board Directors and fans of Howard Miller gathered at Tolt Middle School on September 24th to celebrate the stunning track and field complex recently completed at the middle school.

Long-time valley resident and schools' supporter Howard Miller was on hand to take part in the ribbon cutting ceremony, for the field which bears his name. Mr. Miller and his wife, Marion, came to Carnation in 1939, their two children graduated from Tolt High School and became teachers. In 1953, Howard began reporting Tolt sports for the local newspaper; in later years he was given a trophy making him a “Lifetime Tolt High School Demon,” and in 1980 Howard Miller was proclaimed the “Number One Fan.” In October of 1981, the Howard Miller Athletic Field was officially dedicated.

The athletic field project which includes: a new high jump area, new bleachers and football field, new soccer fields and a rubberized track was made possible with the passing of the February 2007 $56,600.000 RSD Capital Improvement Bond . This bond included improvements at Tolt Middle School, the Tolt fields, Cedarcrest High School, Carnation Elementary, Cherry Valley Elementary, Stillwater Elementary and Eagle Rock Multi-Age Program, as well as an alternative school campus to house the PARADE Program, CLIP Program, and a future middle school alternative program.

District Superintendent, Conrad Robertson expressed special thanks to Heery International, Inc., Erickson McGovern Architects, Weisman Design Group, and Precision Earthworks for their impressive work on the field's project, and to the district office staff, Tolt administrators and all maintenance personnel for their tireless dedication to this inspiring project.
