Transportation
The safety record of buses and drivers is outstanding in the Riverview School District. All buses are equipped with two-way radios, crossing arms, fire extinguishers, chains and/or sanders, and first-aid kits. Safety is the foremost concern of the bus drivers. Prior to leaving the bus garage, each driver performs a pre-trip safety check of the bus using district-established procedures that comply with the State Department of Transportation requirements.

Bus routes are posted 10 days before the start of school at each school site, the local Post Offices, and the Carnation and Duvall libraries.
We ask parents to make sue that students are at bus stops early. At least five minutes prior to the published time to five minutes after the published time. We also ask kindergarten parents to be at the bus stop to receive their students.
Transportation Ridership
On October 15th, the Riverview School District will conduct its annual ridership count survey. The results of this survey determine how much money the district receives in transportation funds from the state for the entire school year. It is very important that the district have the maximum number of students who are eligible for transportation ride their bus to school.
Bus Rules
Riverview School bus drivers are responsible for children's lives every day. It is a responsibility that requires the cooperation of the students in observing the safety rules enforced by the district. Students riding on the bus are expected to
conform to behavior rules corresponding to classroom conduct regulations. Students are to
- Sit properly in their seats
- Refrain from throwing objects
- Keep hand to self
- Be courteous to others
- Obey the bus driver at all times
- Promote bus cleanliness
- Refrain from vandalism
The driver is in full charge of the bus and the students. The driver will report any problems to the Bus Discipline Officer for students who violate the rules on the bus. The Riverview Bus Discipline Officer is Pat Hughes. On the first encounter with a problem, there is usually no write-up. However, with a second report from a bus driver on student misconduct, a bus suspension could occur. The principal has the authority to suspend the student's bus riding privileges and will take appropriate actions. For the safety of all rides, the Board of Directors has authorized the installation of video cameras on district buses.
Students may ride only their regularly assigned bus and disembark only at their regular stop. A student must have written permission from their parent or guardian, subject to the principal's approval in writing, for any change in their assigned bus.
Emergency Transportation Information
Hazardous weather or unexpected emergencies may create changes in bus transportation times and pickup-drop points for school children. Schools will be open unless a Riverview School District "School Closure" announcement is made by radio and television stations.
School Bus Operations may have to be altered or canceled. Example messages are:
- Schools Closed - This means all schools will be closed for one day only. All meetings, field trips and after school activities will be canceled. No out-of-district transportation.
- School One (or Two) Hours Late, Emergency Bus Routes - This means that school will be either one or two hours late or that students will be dismissed at the regular time unless otherwise announced. Parents should listen to the radio for further announcements. Buses will operate on emergency bus routes, if announced.
- No Transportation - Schools are operating, but no school district transportation will be provided for any student, including kindergarten, head start, special education, sports, and activities. Parents must provide transportation to school for their children.
- No out of District Transportation - Schools are operating, but no school district transportation vehicle (buses, vans, cars) will operate outside of school district boundaries. Includes special education, field trips, activities, sports, games, etc.
- Limited Bus Transportation - buses will not travel some of the hills, i.e., Novelty Hill (east or west), Stephens Street in Duvall, 344th off the Lake Langlois Road, some of the streets on Union Hill, Mountain View and Lake Margaret. Buses will be at the bottom of these hills for students.
Bus Drivers will notify students where to meet the bus if there is "limited transportation." Students affected by Limited Bus Transportation must be at the alternate pick up point designated not later than the time they would normally be picked up at their regular bus stop.
